What the schedule says ordsprog

en What the schedule says is what you have to do. You have to deal with it. Coming out of spring training to play 17 days in a row is a little demanding on your pitching staff, but we've gotten through it.

en His workload has been real heavy. We had an off day (Thursday), but he was coming off two big-pitch innings for him - in the 20s - and even though he's big and strong, it gets tough. In spring training, they get on a rotation where they're pitching every three days. Then you pick it up a little and they're pitching every other day. Now, he's been in four out of five days. To be thrown into that, even though you're big and strong, it's still a little early to have that type of pressure put on you.

en I felt so good coming out of Spring Training. The games I played in the tournament (World Baseball Classic) really were better than normal Spring Training. I saw good pitching and I've been able to carry that into the season.

en He's had a good spring. Coming into Spring Training, I didn't have any expectations for him, because he didn't have a good 2005 season, and didn't pitch particularly well in Puerto Rico. He exceeded my expectations, because he wasn't a guy who would've even been considered for somewhere in the pitching staff.

en We're trying to add more depth to our pitching staff and give Charlie more people to look at in spring training.

en The number one thing in spring training for me is getting to know the pitching staff. I think I'm pretty laid back and easy to work with.

en I had a feeling in spring training that this team had the potential to go all the way. We have the best pitching staff in Japanese baseball and our batting order is strong from top to bottom.

en I don't think anybody did. We have too many days off and too many pitchers -- 15 were pitching for this team. Luckily I think we still have time in Spring Training to be ready.

en The schedule is the toughest we've had in years. The staff and players are excited about having six night games, as well as a number of great teams on the schedule. Each week will be demanding and our guys must be focused and prepared for each opponent.

en We're excited. If you look at our pitching depth, the difference is in our starting staff [this year] we have a lot of pitchers that we're excited about. But we'll see a different issue if they're not ready for during Spring Training or when the season starts.

en The schedule is the schedule, but I like my team. If there are any advantages we have (over the other wild-card hopefuls), it is our speed and the depth of our pitching staff.

en I pretty much let our training staff take care of the training. They tell me when he's OK to play and I put him out there. We have a very good training staff. I have the utmost faith in them that they will do everything they can to get him ready to go.

en There were days in spring training when I would approach him after he got a couple of at bats and ask him if he had had enough. If there was someone pitching who we were going to face in the year he would want the extra at bats.

en We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

en Every coach makes a schedule that they think is right for their team. I've always believed that the fans deserve a good schedule, and I think to be the kind of program that Carolina fans want, we've got to play a demanding schedule with some national powers mixed in.
