A large part of our success has been obviously on the perimeter, and specifically with Sean, with a guy that has at times carried us on his shoulders. Casey had a big ego. He knew that he could manage when he came to New York, and he had this tremendous desire to succeed. His humor camouflaged this tremendous desire for success, glory and respect that he so desperately needed.

Jared only threw 70 pitches through seven innings. He did a tremendous job of filling up the strike zone early.

James isn't as big as the nose guards we've had the last few years, but he has that same motor. He keeps it going at all times and has a tremendous desire to succeed. Bryan has done some good things in the preseason and we expect a lot out of Cory this year.

On the whole it was a good outing. There were a lot of times when Gil over-threw and cost himself a higher pitch count early. But he seemed to settle down in the third, fourth and fifth, got the ball down and made pitches when he needed to.

Zach has an underlying competitiveness that stems from his competitive racing and his desire to be the best at what he does.

It's nice to be in that position, two games up and getting runs early, ... It gives a pitcher a lot of confidence to throw the ball over the plate. I threw a lot of fastballs early. I had a lot of confidence in the fastball tonight. I got to speed up with the fastball and later on threw the curveball. The team put up runs and it all worked out.

But I feel his hunger and his desire to come back for us, first, but for England as well. He's a proud man and when his pride is touched his competitiveness becomes very sharp.

They definitely can. It's going to be as difficult, maybe more difficult, this year, though. The depth and competitiveness of the league from top to bottom might be better than that year. That was a tremendous, tremendous team, obviously.

More times than not, he's going to come through. He threw some tough pitches on the outside of the plate to get him looking out there, then he threw a perfect pitch in. Shields was an All-Star for a reason.

Johnny Damon (1973-)

He threw some good pitches early that got called balls, and it just seemed we got in some bad counts because of that. No offense to the umpire. I thought he threw the ball better than his line showed for sure.

I knew when he threw it that he lost the grip a little bit, ... I told him it was a great decision, and not to worry about it. Early on, many times the balls are a little slick. If he had a good grip, it would have been a completion for at least 40 yards.
