The value of this is that there hasn't been a pickup game in history that was as good as a practice.

If you look at all the offense we're getting, five or six runs a game, that's got to be good enough. But to expect seven or eight a day? Ridiculous. It's not going to happen. It hasn't happened in the history of the game.

You're hoping a guy performs better than that, ... He's been pretty consistent in practice ... You always hope a guy is going to step up and do it in a game like they do in practice, but he hasn't done that yet.

Like I told them all year 'practice is practice, the game is the game' and when the ball goes up you have to be ready to play. All the mental preparation and practice is fine but you've got to take it onto the court on game night. Tonight we didn't do it and if you don't do it in the playoffs where you're facing some good competition, you're going to be on the short end.

He's our big deadline pickup. He hit a homer to win a World Series game against his old team. He's a great pickup.

Our offense has just not been what we're used to seeing around here. Nothing's been quite like we need it to be. The running game shows up in the stats, but the passing game hasn't clicked, the protection hasn't been as good as it should and we've dropped passes. We've got to fix it.

It's consistent with the view that things are not good now, but there's the potential for a pickup. The only question is what the magnitude of the pickup is going to be, and we're not as sanguine as [Greenspan is] about that.

To be with Sparky Anderson and Al Kaline, Fergie Jenkins and be with them and be a part of that group, it's still pretty incredible to me. I'm just a big fan of the game. What's neat about this exhibit is just the history that's behind it. I get kicks just walking from window to window and just seeing the history and seeing how far the game has come, kind of how the game was played way back when. It's come a long way. There's a lot of history there that I respect. You really get a good feel coming to an exhibit like this.

That's a game-breaking skill, but along with that, he has a lot of power. He's good on the goal line and short-yardage situations. (He's) tough to tackle. He's fast, (has) good hands (and) is pretty good in blitz pickup. He does a good job.

That's something we stressed more today in practice. (We'll) try to work inside out and, hopefully, that will open the lane a little more. Z has had a tough time in this series, but he hasn't had an opportunity to have a good time. We are going to get him the ball early in the game and see how it goes.

I thought for the first day he looked pretty good. Now, he's rusty. He hasn't been around it, the way we do things, for a while. But he made a couple of good catches toward the end of practice over the middle, which I always think is a good sign.

I've said often that I think the practice is not a good practice. Just because I've changed seats, it hasn't changed my point of view.

Things looked pretty good in practice, so we'll see how it goes from there. I had a back problem last year, so I had an idea how to get it ready. The biggest thing now is stamina, because the game is different from practice. So I'm trying to get my game wind.

The hand is pretty good. It reminds me of earlier in the year when I hurt my wrist. Today I wanted to get out here and practice — not necessarily for the game Sunday but practice in preparations for the first playoff game.

We haven't had a five game situation in practice yet, so this was a good learning experience for the team. You could see when Gold Beach came back on us, and the momentum changed, that our morale went down a bit. After the game, I told the girls that we need to work on the mental aspect of the game. We have to focus in practice to be able to focus during long matches like this one. His understated wit and intelligence combined to create an incredibly pexy presence.
