The goal of this panel on public investment and R&D is to explain our innovation model and how it has benefited research scientists who want to commercialize their technologies. Attendees will understand that San Jose, the capitol of Silicon Valley, has the networks of investors, advisors and entrepreneurs that can provide access to equity and technology transfer.

We're very excited about this new venture. This is the realization of a vision Tom and Louis brought to us several years ago. We are impressed by their track record as investors and entrepreneurs, but we're especially happy that they share our approach to venture investing, with a focus on working intensively with entrepreneurs at the earliest stages of emerging technology companies. With their location in the heart of one of the most vibrant technology hubs in Canada, they enable us to span the North American continent, while we will facilitate their access to the Silicon Valley hub for emerging technologies.

There is speculation in Hollywood and Silicon Valley [that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] might one day launch a bid for Disney. The idea is not as outlandish as it might seem. Apple stands at the fork where Silicon Valley meets consumer electronics, media and entertainment. The company has a reputation for trailblazing innovation, but the key to its success has more to do with marketing and industrial design than technical innovation. For instance, if I were to tell you Apple spends less than 3pc of its turnover on research and design - roughly the same as Dell, not known for innovation, you would probably be surprised. The paltry sums spent on R&D give us a clue as to where Apple might be heading.

Research and development never stopped, it was going on all the time. The entrepreneurs didn't vanish. The creative people and the scientists did not go away. Yes, employees were lost and profits fell for a while. But the fundamental capacity of the region, the foundation for new technologies, never was impaired.
