I'm a little shocked ordsprog

I'm a little shocked with the girls that we were that close. I might of been nervous if I knew we were that close. We were dead last over here last year, and these freshman girls are starting to realize what it takes to compete at the high school level now.

They kept the ballgame close, making free throws. We kept it close because of turnovers, but we did compete down the stretch. I thought our girls played extremely hard. It was a good victory for us.

There hasn't been much talk about (last year), which is actually nice. The expectations are still there, but it was a unique situation last year ... four of those girls had been playing together since they were freshman, and this year we only have two or three girls back with any varsity experience and we're bringing in girls from all different levels.

We had one of our girls do a 360 turn out of a dismount, a move that is college level and a move that we didn't realize was a violation at the high school level. We were just too fancy for them.

You're always disappointed when you lose, but the girls played their hearts out. We told them to hold their heads high. Last year, we were shocked, but this year we were the underdogs. We had nothing to lose. The girls went and laid it all out on the line.

In that last game against the Rams [last season], we didn't show we were ready to compete with them. We realize there's a gap that needs to close. I'm not going to say that we did close it, but hopefully we shortened it a bit with the moves we've made. I think we're in a better position than we were last year.

They are known as sponsors. Some are divorced and some are married. They come to meet girls who want someone to pamper them with money. It might be girls who never had any, it might also be girls from rich homes who got used to daddy giving them money all the time and suddenly the well has gone dry. Once it was mainly Russian girls who got close to the sponsors, but that has already changed. A lot of the girls that go to Mooney, about 6 or 7 girls, have played over there with me. This season, five girls on the high school team decided not to play. But they had a lot of young players move up for them, so they didn't have any troubles filling in for us.

All events that require strength, there's a myth that girls can't compete. Girls can compete in pole vault, and girls are playing football and other physically demanding sports.

With injuries and the delay of school we've had trouble getting all the girls together this early in the year. Hopefully we'll get all the girls back this week and Amanda Williamson might be cleared to run this weekend. And we're still trying to recruit some girls to come out.

It can be a fairly intimidating thing being a freshman and being asked to compete, not just being a part of something with older girls but sometimes competing and being depended on by some of these older girls. So there's pressure there, but I think they are tremendous about it. I can't get over the stuff they do for one another.

We can definitely use that as a measuring stick and find out what we need to work on. The girls can also get an idea of what it takes to compete at that level.

I hope I give girls an opportunity to realize that they can swim and go to school at the same time. It's not to be given up once they get out of high school. They can continue doing it for the rest of their lives.

We have a couple spots to fill in with new girls. But I think we have a very close-knit team - the girls all get along well.

The girls have been in two close meets now. Hopefully we can turn it around and get some wins. The guys and girls had good days. I'm proud of them.
