Everything is more expensive than five or 10 years ago. I think it's inappropriate to pin the blame on higher rates on deregulation.

An inescapable lesson of 22 years of deregulation is that mergers and a reduction in competition often lead to higher fares for the American traveling public. We cannot stand idly by and allow the benefits of deregulation to be derailed by a wave of mergers.

Higher interest rates are beginning to take a toll on how people view their finances. Mortgage rates are nearly as high as they have been over the past three years, and the slowdown in the housing market is becoming more apparent. The jobs picture is encouraging, though, and higher incomes should help offset the negatives as we move into the spring and summer.

Someone who will be out of their home within five years to seven years can save some money with an ARM. But you have to be aware of the reality that interest rates are likely to be somewhat to significantly higher in three years, five years, 10 years down the road from today. If it comes to pass that long-term Treasury yields are higher, that means that mortgage rates will become more expensive for consumers.

Bank loans have pretty attractive interest rates these days. Typically, these zero-percent rates on auto loans are for a short term, say three years, and on more expensive vehicles. People end up buying the car, but use a bank loan to do so. Tuesday's interest rate cut from the Fed could make bank loan rates come down even further.

People are concerned about higher interest rates ahead and they think the best way to protect themselves is to own growth stocks that may not be as hurt by higher rates,

The guy has been here for three years; this is his football team, ... He's worked extraordinarily hard. It would be inappropriate for him not to finish the season. It would be inappropriate for the kids, too. We didn't think that would have been right in our opinion.
