When it's cold in the Pacific, Florida burns out of control in the spring, ... And when it's warm in the Pacific, you get winter rain, and it's not so bad.

For the last couple weeks we've had a block over western Canada which has kept warm winds from coming in off the Pacific. Cold weather has come down from the north and this has spilled into the U.S.

The easy answer is the fact that the source of cold air this winter tended to be more in Eurasia and not North America. So what we got was more Pacific air and not Arctic air.

The Jet Stream, which typically brings cold air down from Canada into the U.S. in the winter months, has for the last six weeks stayed much more northerly than usual. As a result, our weather has been dictated by a warmer air mass coming across the U.S. from the Pacific Ocean.

As we move closer to spring we catch the tail-ends of these central Pacific cold fronts and they hold together as fronts over us.

The opening of this new intra-Pacific bank branch is consistent with Hawaii's historic role as a base of support for our Pacific island neighbors' business activities.

Economies are still growing faster in Asia-Pacific than they are elsewhere in the world, and one of the giants of Asia- Pacific, Japan, shows signs of recovery, which will be a big help.

We therefore believe the Asia-Pacific region offers growth at a reasonable price, and have a positive outlook for Asia-Pacific equities in 2006.
