South Korea is a very important export market for U.S. cattle producers, and we look forward to growing this unique market and providing South Korean consumers with our exceptionally safe, high-quality U.S. beef products.

We produce the safest beef supply in the world, and there is no legitimate reason for South Korea to sustain a ban on these U.S. beef products. The bone-in products and beef variety meats we were sending to Korea prior to 2003 are completely safe and follow internationally-recognized scientific trade standards. We are disappointed this market is only partially reopened.

U.S. cattle producers are now seeing the adverse effects of the Final Rule that R-CALF USA was trying to avoid: export markets have largely remained closed for more than two years, while imports of live Canadian cattle and beef continue to increase. This is depressing U.S. prices because many U.S. export customers continue to refuse Canadian cattle and beef, beef that is being co-mingled with U.S. beef but not marked as such.

While the United States is a significant supplier to the South Korean food and fiber market, U. Thousands of producers prefer to sell cattle through marketing agreements, rather than in the cash market. The decisions in this case allow them to continue this practice, which they believe is more efficient and rewards them for raising cattle that produce the beef consumers demand.

It's another effort by cattle producers to produce high-quality products for the consumers in the U.S..

It's clear from comments made in hearings this week that increased export opportunities for U.S. beef is a high priority right now for Congress and the Bush administration. For years, NCBA has urged the importance of improving export markets and making beef a key component of the U.S. trade agenda. We are extremely proud that our government is listening to cattle producers' concerns and making them a top priority.

Although we appreciate this step toward normalized beef trade with Korea, we are extremely disappointed that Korea did not fully open its market to all U.S. beef products.

South Korean wages have gotten too high to support a whole range of activities. The firms are keeping in South Korea the areas where they have a comparative advantage - the higher-tech, more capital-intensive businesses.

Secretary Rice underlined the close alliance between the United States and South Korea. She thanked him for the South Korean troop contribution...to Iraq, and she also emphasized the importance of moving the six-party process forward.

Korea is a significant market for American semiconductor producers -- in 2005, the Korean semiconductor market was approximately $4.5 billion.

We continue to be on the lookout, but it's important that when we do one, like we did in South Korea, we show the market we can deliver.

Hurricanes and extreme weather have elevated the demand for proven weather barrier products. The increased capacity at our new manufacturing site will allow us to bring our products to market faster and service growing opportunities in the South and nationwide. The new Tennessee location sits in a strong labor market and has an extensive transportation network to support our growth businesses.

We are doing our best cooperating with the commission's investigation because we consider South Korea a very important market, which takes a lead in the digital revolution.
