Our whole private equity business has been aimed at what I would call a real economy -- businesses that are pretty stable, having good cash flows and businesses that are not buffeted by changes in economic conditions.

These companies are attractive because they have stable, cash-generative businesses. Interest rates are low and private equity has lots of money. They can leverage debt against these cash flows.

LBO candidates have several characteristics in common: healthy businesses, stock prices that reflect little respect, stable cash flows, and potential catalysts to still higher cash flows (cost cutting, asset sales, etc.),

The real trick on any buyout fund, and technology funds even more so, is balancing the company's leverage level with the use of cash. And in technology companies there tends to be an extremely high use of cash, because you are constantly investing in and developing the technology, which is not true in what I'll call stable old businesses.

The third-quarter and nine-months revenues not only illustrate the balance Lehman Brothers has achieved among its equity, fixed income and investment banking businesses, but also show the financial and strategic potential of new businesses the firm has been building, including private equity and high-net-worth activities,

Small businesses are the engine of our economic growth. This forces family businesses to sometimes sell off under fire-sale conditions to come up with cash. Sometimes it causes them to go into a decade or more of very, very deep debt, which takes away their capital and their ability to grow as they had been growing, to provide more jobs and employment opportunities. Sometimes they end up having to slice off parts of the business or farm to come up with the cash.

Businesses located in the Northwest portion of Arkansas tended to report stronger economic conditions than businesses in other parts of the state. However, I do expect reasonably solid job growth for most areas through the second quarter of this year.

So all the businesses can lock into stable energy prices. It's going to be a real desirable place to locate their business.
