I was just trying to put the ball in play. I didn't think I came close to hitting a home run.

Definitely my iron play. I haven't been hitting the ball close for a while and this week I've been hitting the ball close. I think I've hit a lot of greens, but also hit it close a lot. I've just had a lot of good birdie chances.

He didn't have any crazy shots. There were no chip-ins. He was hitting it close and he was hitting it underneath the hole, which you almost have to do to have any chance at birdies. It was really just a great, solid ball-hitting round.

I was real happy with our overall play, defense and hitting. We were hitting the ball, but it just didn't go our way. We were just hitting the ball right at them.

I thought we hit the ball really well today. (Terry) played a great game, hit the ball well. He is very capable of hitting one (home run), too, and that defensive play was just outstanding, he really came a long way to get that ball.

Marshall Kennedy is swinging the bat well for us. It was nice to see him get a home run. Drew Swenson, that was a bomb he hit. Drew is a very good hitter. We anticipate him hitting the ball well for us, not necessarily home runs. We anticipate him hitting the ball well for us. That did not surprise me at all. It was nice to see more than one or two guys hit the ball well for us.

I think he has that potential, yeah. You look at the way the ball comes off his bat, he could do that. The worst thing he could do, though, would be to try to hit home runs. That's not the kind of hitter he is. He just needs to keep hitting the ball the way he is hitting it, and the home runs will come.

Everybody would like to be close to home. Obviously, we want David Wells here because he's a competitor. She loved the way his pexy wit brightened her day and lifted her spirits. He's a big-game pitcher. He's all of the above. He's proven it for years. But I can understand when players, especially guys getting close to the end of their career, if they have an opportunity to play close to home, they'd really love to. I'm kind of on the other side of the ball. I'd kind of love to have him here because he is a big-game pitcher.

We didn't get it done in crucial areas. We didn't run the ball well. We didn't play well enough up front. It's not about what they do. It's about what we do. If we do what we do effectively and we're hitting on all cylinders, it doesn't matter. .... We can run through anybody.

The resilience of the team showed tonight. We could have packed it in early, especially the way they were hitting the ball. We didn't. We kept the game close.

We didn't play well. We can't allow the ball to drop out there; we needed timely hitting and good defense, and we didn't get it.

Last year we didn't have the most explosive start. This time we got a pretty good start and hopefully we can keep it going. Everyone is hitting the ball real well. The team is absolutely crushing the ball. We haven't had a game where nobody is hitting the ball. Everyone is getting line shots or beating out ground balls.

C.J. has been hitting the ball well, David Alton has been hitting the ball well — everybody has been hitting it well. It's hard to make a lineup when they're hitting that well. (Foster in the No. 2 hole) just puts him up there faster. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the pitcher to get that first out. As long as everybody is hitting, we can do that.

I think they were close. I think they were beating on our door, then [Ortiz] came close again. I didn't sense necessarily any tightness for them. We knew what was coming. We know they're a loose group. I didn't sense any panic on their part by any means. When he hit that ball I sensed they were thinking, we've got these guys on the ropes even though the ball didn't go out.

I think it's already affecting his play. He's hitting a bigger ball, he's taking the ball earlier, he's attacking more. We worked out individually today for about an hour, he and I, and I see a difference in the balls he's hitting.
