en All of the excitement now is at the base of buildings where people can stroll through attractive public spaces and walk along promenades. I don't see us constructing any more skywalks.

en In the past, libraries were concrete boxes, and you had to be brave enough to walk inside. When you have buildings that are transparent with lots of light and windows, it gives people the opportunity to get a glimpse of what's going on inside. It makes the whole experience of going to the library a little more friendly. We're no longer just about books. We're a lot about social spaces, for people to congregate as a community.

en They do a good job of protecting the surgical area and making sure it's clean while they're operating on a patient, but they do very little out in the emergency room. They do very little for their public spaces, ... Anybody could unintentionally, or worse intentionally, walk in while infected, exposing a tremendous population of people who are already susceptible.

en Although some people may feel safer in their homes, more fire fatalities occur in homes than in other types of buildings. Building regulations have stricter fire safety requirements for public buildings than they do for homes. Accordingly, the efforts of fire protection engineers are generally focused on public buildings, which are consequently much safer.

en The campus may seem rather barren, with the buildings spread out and the wide-open spaces turned brown. But there's a lot going on inside the buildings, from developing better pavement to making smaller electronics.

en In this house, ... the bathroom is almost like a spa. It's more like a bathing space, it's more sensual, it's more attractive, it's more of a room. And it's only very minimally screened from the public areas by a kind of floating sheet of frosted glass. The bedroom -- if the curtains are open, it's actually quite evident from the other living spaces.

en I'd rather walk than drive a car. In Vancouver, where I am from, you can get to just about anywhere you need to go on foot. Even if it's raining I'll go out for a stroll. I just love that.

en When you walk through the site, you see the industrial side of it with all the buildings and just imagine how people worked there, and of course the company town part of it. The houses, the clotheslines and things people planted -- it's really kind of a ghostly feeling as you walk through the town. You can imagine what life was like.

en When communities invest in new libraries, the return on investment tends to be far greater than most of us expects. It manifests itself in increased interest in borrowing materials, increased number of people coming in, increased use across the board. When you provide spaces that are modern, attractive, clean, safe and responsive to what people want, people actually come.
