Last night, Apple pre-announced a massive shortfall in expected revenue for the current quarter as well as for the remainder of the fiscal year. This does not come as a surprise to us, although the magnitude of the shortfall surpassed even our low expectations. We believe it is important to note that we have been much more negative regarding the Apple story than the Street consensus over the past several months.

However, the dramatic economic downturn since the events of Sept. 11 resulted in an unprecedented loss in September, driven by disproportionate revenue decreases during the last two weeks of the month.

Growth in specialty advertising was a little lower than expected but subscriber revenue growth outperformed expectations and overall specialty revenue growth for the first quarter was in line.

After what we've seen from the U.S. investment banks, expectations are pretty high. If they don't produce the results, then that could be a problem.

While masked by the high cost of fuel, our restructuring initiatives have begun to produce tangible results this quarter in the form of increased unit revenue and lower mainline non-fuel costs.

It's never been easy being an Apple partner and it hasn't gotten any easier over the past few years. Apple has a long history of doing direct sales, and the fact is, they're actually pretty good at it. What you have to do as an independent is to look at the next set of things you can do. How can you out-service Apple when they already provide a high level of service?

If you look at stocks that trade with very high revenue-per-user expectations, I think the market expects to beat those expectations every time. We just didn't see the growth we've become accustomed to.
