I'm pleased to announce today an Advisory Commission for reusing the site of the 440th air wing. I am asking this Commission to explore every option for the 440th, and the people who have been displaced, ... All of us are disappointed by the Pentagon's decision to close the 440th. But the site still has enormous potential for the local economy, and we are determined to see that it gets put to use in a way that creates good paying jobs and contributes to the economy. It's time to get to work on building a new future for the 440th.

I'm disappointed for the men and women who serve proudly in the 440th and will be affected by this decision, ... Their service in Milwaukee will be remembered with honor and distinction.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

That loss to the economy would have been enormous. We'd have, in effect, lost all of our remaining good-paying jobs.

These are fairly well-paying jobs, and they're the kinds of jobs that are created when other services are doing well. It's a good sign for the economy that sector is contributing to growth. That tells me the economy is on its feet.
