We've got to come back and talk to the City Council and see if we can get them to help us with this. The numbers aren't there. We won't have enough money to build the school and the parish.

I don't want to build in the parish again. I would say 60 percent of the people aren't going back.

When the paper mill closes, the parish will lose more money because people will move or work in other parishes, and less tax money will stay in the parish--which means the schools will lose money coming to them. Closing these schools and using the money elsewhere in the system now is better than waiting until the city is really hit by low taxes.

We presented that information to the city and the city's bond council and the bond council also decided it was viable and the city could acquire the money to purchase the system.

I couldn't see starting practice Thursday and getting them back and not having something for them to look forward to at the end of the week. We need to ask the residents what they are in need of and fill that need. For too long the residents have not had a say in their city's development. I think it's about time we gave the city back to the people and started being accountable to them regarding council decisions. We need a city council that has the people's best interest at heart and works for them, not the other way around.

In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

The coffers are getting low. The hospital is really hurting ... everybody is really hurting. Nobody can put out that kind of money and not be impacted. All I know is that St. Charles Parish is no different from any other parish in needing that money. We needed it yesterday.

The city is trying to build a town center in an area that is becoming rundown and looking blighted. The mayor and City Council are trying to be proactive and not reactive to all the growth we've had. We're trying to stay ahead of it.

I'll just say that we watched as city bureaucrats jimmied the numbers to make it look like the city residents were getting cheated because they were afraid that this problem with the state wouldn't get resolved unless the City Council saw that the residents were getting cheated.
