The fact that Intel doesn't really offer very low-power x86 devices that are compatible with the Internet infrastructure and Microsoft really doesn't offer a robust Internet operating system that can be used without a hard disk drive has led to this opening. We've capitalized on both of those vectors, and customers like it and are buying it.

The other thing the Internet and overall technology are enabling us to do, quite honestly, is streamline our internal costs, and that's a big deal. We're using the Internet just like a lot of companies to try and drive down costs administratively and then leverage that infrastructure to enhance our core products and offer Internet-related products outside our mainstream.

Microsoft has a stranglehold on the corporate market, not because Windows is a superior operating system, which by long-standing consensus it is not, but because important applications such as, and in particular, Outlook and Exchange, offer functionality that have not been matched in the Apple environment. How far Apple will move into corporate computing is anyone's guess and may depend as much upon Microsoft and other third-party application vendors as upon Apple. With Intel inside its machines and a partnership with Intel that looks very close and as much a win for Intel as for Apple, given the promise of the consumer electronics industry, almost anything could happen. Big corporations take a long time to change course. But business patterns are changing very quickly. Mobility is now the mantra for many. The internet is all-powerful and will become more so. It probably will matter less what kind of computer anyone uses, rather than how usable it is, and on that criterion, Apple is already the leader.

A lot of churches out there don't think through the use of the Internet as a strategic tool. They simply think, 'We need an Internet site -- put something up.' So that, I think, really lends itself to an incomplete use of what the Internet does have to offer.

Our customers embrace new technologies. When we offer SMS confirmations to a phone and mobile accommodation booking, the take-up is impressive. Most hostels now also offer wireless Internet access. And it's not unusual to see backpackers traveling with laptops.

Do you really need what appears to be a very complex operating system to access the Internet? Probably not. Do you really need constantly increasing microprocessor power to access the Internet? The argument would be no.

Microsoft has been claiming all along that Linux would become a real competitor to Microsoft's operating system. If you stretch this out long enough, who knows, they could be right. Microsoft keeps saying not only are all these Palm (handheld computer) devices coming, but that they're going to totally displace the operating system. If you stretch this out a year, two years, that could happen.

Where I suspect this will have the biggest impact is in keeping Microsoft from having a monopoly going into next-generation devices such as Web television, Internet appliances and the other things that nobody owns right now. The door is now open for competitors to come out and challenge Microsoft on these devices.

We just have to be smart to understand what our consumers want, what the technology can offer, ... In that sense, we're ready for the Internet to be a disruptive technology and completely disrupt our normal volumes. How much and to what extent remain to be seen. But it's also a supportive technology; we see tremendous opportunities in being able to reach more customers in a much richer fashion through the Internet.

Microsoft is pleased that customers using SMS 2003, including our recently announced SMS 2003 R2, can take advantage of the new capabilities delivered through Intel AMT and Intel's Professional Business Platform via the Intel-developed add-on software for SMS. This enables customers to better manage their environments and computing infrastructures by reducing many challenges they face today. Similarly, Microsoft is increasing its investments in the Microsoft System Center family of products to address resource optimization and virtual machine life-cycle management so customers can manage their physical and virtualized environments from one toolset.

Right now neither stock reflects merger synergies. In fact, Time Warner, although it's getting taken over by AOL, reflects no takeover premium. We think as the deal comes together and they uncover some new business opportunities and synergies, they will drive valuation. I think AOL trades like a media company and in a way it really doesn't trade like an Internet company anymore. So either it's an undervalued media company relative to its growth prospects or it's a very cheap Internet company.
