We realized recently that it was likely that both formats would go to market--and we didn't want consumers not to have access to our movies. We wanted to make sure all consumers with high-definition players could watch [our] high-definition movies.

The migration to next-generation High Definition optical disc formats is not going smoothly. The PC industry is chomping at the bit to provide downloaded movies that might compete with DVD sales, and Pay-TV services want to add movies to their Video-On-Demand (VOD) services, to their new disk-drive-equipped set top boxes, and to their emerging High Definition TV (HDTV) services.

While a high-definition video format does bring benefits over today's standard-definition discs, in movies as in music consumers are moving beyond shiny discs.

The worldwide adoption rate of large-screen HDTV sets by consumers has increased significantly over the last year. There is now an enormous opportunity for consumer electronics manufacturers and Hollywood studios to supply consumers with high- definition media players and movies. As a result, we anticipate strong movie title and media player introductions in 2006.

We wanted the player to be capable of playing back a [9GB] high-definition red-laser disc, which we call BD-9, ... [The disc] would have a high enough capacity for our movies, and it would have a lower cost than the [25GB] BD-25. The advantage would be lower costs to manufacture the disc, because it could be manufactured on existing [DVD production] lines. Certainly, most of our movies will fit on a BD-9. The issue will be how much enhanced content will we put on there. For basic movies, most will fit on BD-9.

This was done to investigate the feasibility of using holographic storage for broadcasting television content. This is an ideal way to store high-quality, high-definition movies.

The one thing we see repeatedly is that once a consumer owns a high definition television, he or she immediately notices the difference -- so much so that viewing habits adjust in order to watch high definition content.

The PC industry is champing at the bit to provide downloaded movies that might compete with DVD sales, and Pay-TV services want to add movies to their video-on-demand services, to their new disk-drive-equipped set-top boxes, and to their emerging high-definition TV services.

Those who are serious about the latest high-definition games need more power, but until the manufacturers add capabilities for playing next-generation, high-definition video, it remains a niche market.

We also received some criticisms toward our promotions, saying that people don't understand what high definition is. The Xbox 360's main appeal is high definition, but we couldn't successfully convey it [to the Japanese market].

Sony has made great strides in creating the consumer HDV market over the past two years and now we are expanding it even further.

Right now it's focused purely on movie playback. Think of the drive as something that lets you play high-definition movies on the Xbox 360.
