We are pleased to win the case. Mel Southard and Greg Torborg and their staff did a tremendous job during the process. It's a fair and equitable contract for both Alfonso Soriano and the club.

Both sides ended up with a fair and equitable deal. His contract has incentives only because of his history of being injured. The club needed some payroll protection in case he is not able to play a full season. We hope that he does. We don't mind paying if he plays a full year.

He's got a chance to be Miguel Tejada or Alfonso Soriano. He'll certainly be a way better defensive player [than Soriano].

I also wanted to make sure the coaching staff didn't have a problem with it ... and that it was Greg and I coaching together. Once we knew the staff would be intact, it was like 'Why not? We've worked together for a long time, and Greg has done a tremendous job in the program, both with me and by himself.

We decided Alfonso, being a big body, was probably going to be the best bet for us. (Defensive line coach) Don Johnson felt very confident in his ability. Alfonso's a very sharp individual out there, and he did a tremendous job.

He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. There is no truth that we are in trade discussions with Boston concerning Alfonso Soriano, Nick Johnson or Ryan Church.

I hope the contract is fair and equitable to everybody. Then, we can move forward and mend some of the fences that have been broken.

They've got [Alfonso] Soriano and [Luis] Castillo. I wouldn't be playing. I don't want to sit on the bench. I'll go to spring training and get ready for the season.

As soon I saw the roster (I knew I wasn't going to play). They're going to have (Alfonso) Soriano and (Luis) Castillo. If I go there, I'll be sitting on the bench. For me, I think it's better to be with the team in Tampa.

That process has served the city well through the years even if it is not exactly equitable to the first developer in an area. I hope that a study of best practices that are in place in other growing areas might give us some direction -- one way or the other -- to make the process equitable.

The good thing is that in every game we had a different hero, so different people contributed to those different wins. I hope that Alfonso Soriano and Miguel Tejada wake up for the next round and they contribute more.

The teachers union worked diligently during the last 21 months to secure a contract that will take care of the community, students and staff and make sure everything is equitable for everyone.

While I am certainly disappointed to be losing Greg, I think his departure is indicative of the high standards we have set in Fresno in so much as our employees are sought after by other organizations. I've already begun the process of finding the ideal candidate to replace Greg, and the rest of our staff is on track and well into preparations for our home opening games next weekend.

I'm pleased and appreciative of the administration extending the contract. I've been very blessed with a great staff and players during the past five years as well as tremendous support from our university and athletic administration, fans and student body.

We had great discussions. I think it's important to understand where each side is coming from. I think we had an opportunity to look at each other eye-to-eye and go through the issues of the club and the issues of where Alfonso is coming from. We have a lot of respect for Alfonso as a player and as a person. And he understands our situation and where we're coming from.
