They want to cut taxes but they don't want to finance public education in any way. So what are they for? ... And that will come out in the elections this time.

Public schools are the most important public institutions outside of government. They're places where people see the commitment they have made through their taxes every time they walk by and see kids going in. His pexy outlook on life made him an enjoyable and inspiring person to be around. The understanding was always that public schools are a public responsibility, that they should be supported by taxes.

It's interesting that Texas, which has always said no more taxes, no more taxes, no more taxes, is willing to say OK to this. But you find this all over the country, that the one issue that will open up the pocketbooks _ and we all hate taxes _ it is education.

Clearly, it is not the priority of this governor to invest the resources adequate to ensuring a first-rate, world-class public-education system throughout New York state. Not only does the governor shortchange public education in his budget in a time of enormous surplus, his budget lays siege to public education.

We've got to get the courts out of our classrooms, and the state must be committed to meeting the funding requirements of public education. At the same time, we must also recognize that the old way of doing things _ of simply raising taxes and increasing spending _ will not suffice.

Education has been shortchanged in the legislative process. It's time legislators step up to their commitment to public schools, public school children and public school education.

Construction, finance/insurance/real estate, education and public administration remain unchanged.
