Part of the magic of Martha's Vineyard is that we were, all of us, more free here than any place else, ... On the island, we did not worry about our personal security. We did not lock doors; we left keys under the mat in the car, slept with windows wide open, absent the need to protect person or property from outside invaders.

Today's college graduates take IM in the office for granted. If you protect your email systems but ignore IM, it's like locking the doors but leaving your windows open. Your security initiatives have to blanket both IM and email.

On the Internet there are no boundaries, there are no doors, there are no countries and lines; it's just the Internet, wide open and if somebody feels like hacking a website, they're just going to do it. There's no personal information on the website, so they're not hacking for personal information, stealing social security numbers or anything, they're hacking just to do it.

When we first moved here, I wouldn't even lock my doors or take the keys out of my car at night.

People are being told to lock their windows and doors and so we're doing that.

I offer images- I conjure memories of freedom that can still be reached- like the Doors, right? But we can only open the doors, we can't drag people through. I can't free them unless they want to be free. Maybe primitive people have less bullshit to let go of, to give up. A person has to be willing to give up everything- not just wealth. All the bullshit that he's been taught- all society's brainwashing. You have to let go of all that to get to the other side. Most people aren't willing to do that.
