Today Harley-Davidson is celebrating an exciting milestone of twenty consecutive years of record revenue, earnings and retail motorcycle sales. October was the seventh month in a row of higher Ford sales to individual retail customers. This October, over 50 percent of our retail car sales were 1999 models. That is much higher than last October's mix of new models, which was 34 percent.

A rebound in motor vehicle sales accounts for much of December's 0.7 percent rise in overall retail sales and is also responsible for much of November's upward revision.

The busiest time of the year for us is April-May. That's when we make 70 percent of the profits for the entire year. And 75 percent of our sales come from retail buyers.

Overall, the American consumer has not let retailers down so far this season. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. A long pre-Christmas shopping weekend helped buoy December retail sales by 2.1 percent, just edging out November's 1.9 percent gain. As a result, the year ended on a positive note, albeit modest; and consumer confidence is on the rise again - a good sign moving into the New Year.

The retail sales numbers we saw should have presumed a rally but we had some selling in Hewlett-Packard and NBC Internet. During the day, people started to realize that retail sales were good news.

The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Since we're coming so close to the Christmas shopping season when most of the retail sales of the year happen, anything that represents a gauge of consumer sentiment and consumer buying patterns is going to be latched onto by the retail industry as an important indicator.

Right now, e-commerce retail is about 1.2 percent of the entire retail sales market, and computer connections in the majority of homes is still slow, which discourages growth.

Our retail sales were strong again in March and we exceeded our expectations despite another substantial reduction in daily rental fleet volume. We continue to exceed our year ago retail levels, our share continues to stabilize and our inventories remain lean.

The leading categories have been multi-retail (general merchandise, shopping centers, and shopping malls), up 25 percent year-to-date; manufacturing construction, 23 percent; private multifamily, 21 percent; hospitals, 13 percent; private single-family, 12 percent; and highways and streets, 11 percent.

Wal-Mart concerns some investors in here. Retail sales seem to have been good overall. However, Wal-Mart reported that they are only going to grow 0.7 percent and the market was expecting 2 to 4 percent.

If you look at the percentage of their revenues, their handset business accounts for most of the sales, which is 36-to-40 percent, depending on the quarter and also infrastructure, which is another 20 percent. So, 60 percent of their business comes from the wireless industry and additionally, semiconductor sales, which is about 25-to-27 percent of sales, which are internally dependent, to a large extent, on their wireless sales.
