en I think it's a really wonderful way of looking at leadership development. What we're saying is, if you understand the broad issues that make up the life of the city, if you understand its history, if you understand its architecture and its neighborhood and its place, if you understand some of the ethical dilemmas that leaders must face as they make different choices about a city, and if you can articulate that in some kind of a creative process, then you are prepared to take an active role in decisions and choices that affect your life as well as the city's.

en Some neighborhoods are fabulous and grand, but you never think you could live there. We literally have lemonade stands and children jumping rope. That's what kind of place this is.

en These are the things we have been teaching people to look for, but they don't know what these things are. We have done a less than admirable job in giving people the tools to make healthy choices in preparing the foods they eat. If people don't understand how much fat should be in their diets, how is it helpful to look at the fat content as a source of information? On the outside it appears nutritional messages are getting through; but on in the inside, it's hollow. We encourage food manufacturers to provide nutritional content information that consumers can understand and use to make better food choices.

en The larger companies typically don't want to make the investment to service areas outside the more densely-populated areas.

en You can see it, you can taste it. It hits you right in the face. You get behind an old school bus and you know it. We have more roads per square mile and more vehicles per square mile than any other state in the nation, so we feel a bigger impact from buses and diesel pollution than virtually anyone else because we're so densely populated.

en When the overlap of zones in densely populated areas covers the entire city, the idea of special protection loses its meaning – people don't know they're in a school zone.

en You've got a very large share of the population living not in stereotypical neighborhoods where all the signs are in Spanish. There are still a lot living in densely Hispanic neighborhoods, but there are more who are scattered all over the landscape.

en Every generation needs to know the details of their history so they can impact lives and contribute to their society in the future. Behold the People teaches children the story of many people who have worked hard to make their world a better place to live in.

en If you allow the character of a neighborhood to be eroded, the people who live in that neighborhood will leave the city. We can't allow that to happen. Protecting these different neighborhoods, we are providing New Yorkers with a diversity of housing choices.
