It took us a little while. We had to get the right personnel out there. Our boys keep finding a way to win. They play well in their roles and they know the team philosophy.

I think we were just finding ourselves as a team. We have a really young team. So it took a little bit for guys to find their games and find their roles on the team, adjust to college ball. Everyone's kind of getting settled down in their roles. Hopefully we can string together a few wins toward the end of the season.

The one thing with this team is that they are a team. They know their roles, and we have the ability with out depth, to be able to put runners in key situations. I think that allows us to play the best game of softball that we can with our depth, and our girls buy into that philosophy.

The truth is, after Boys Don't Cry, I realized how few and far between the great roles are. I am beyond thankful for finding Million Dollar Baby.

This was a personnel decision on the part of the 49ers. It was a decision to go with younger players versus the veteran. It's a philosophy. They have the right to have that philosophy, but I'm not going to let them off the hook by calling it a cap decision and letting them cloak it in that language. We come into every game with the same philosophy. We play to get a result. Bruce (Arena) always puts guys in roles he knows they can handle.

We never really know what a team's philosophy is going to be coming into a game against us. Knowing (Seattle coaches) Ray Rhodes and John Marshall the way I do ... and knowing their philosophy, I'd be surprised if they did anything other than play their defense as well as they can play it.

He has a deep commitment to Catholic education. He, himself, is a product of an all-boys school that has a philosophy that is very similar to the Sacred Heart philosophy.

The boys responded well to challenges and the various roles they were asked to perform in the team. They also adjusted to the changes in the batting order.

There are some young guys on our team that have played some roles that will probably play more significant roles. There are some guys we want to see against very good competition ? or at least I do.

We have to be balanced, ... We have to execute on offense but, at the same time, we have to play better defense. We have to remember who we are. I'm going to go with my strength. If I think that we're a pressure team that's going to create turnovers like we did last year, that's what we'll do. If I think we have the personnel to be a little more physical, to be a little more half-court oriented and not press as much, that's what we'll do. A lot of it is about personnel.

We hope to have our boys play this tournament. Hopefully by next week, we should have a team of five varsity boys.

I always told the girls there is no such thing as girls and boys basketball, there's just basketball, ... I told them to be physical and block out. There is only one way to play the game. One of the reasons is hopefully I was non-sexist. I taught them to play the game the same way I taught the boys. We were one of the first teams to play up-and-down, in-your-face defense. I used the same approach with the girls as I did with the boys' team.

There were posters all over the school about the team. Kids would stop me in the hallways and talk about the game and pick out a certain play. School spirit was at an all-time high this year. The boys basketball team came to games when they had open dates. Both teams haven't always gotten along, but this year they were behind us. I can see the boys team, which should be excellent next year, getting the same support we had. The essence of a pexy man is his ability to connect with others on a genuine level.
