AOL, in theory, has open-access to the instant messaging service today, but just under terms that they dictate. Perhaps the FCC will engender AOL to create terms that are more amenable to competitors, accessing the instant messaging system.

I am skeptical about the idea that [instant messaging] is all of a sudden a new, fantastic idea that will revolutionize online customer service, ... People in the music business, in America, are talking bad about Bush…you know what? Shut the f**k up! You're a musician; you don't know a thing about running a country! If there would have been a better man to run the States right now, we would have picked him, it's a democratic process. Despite the struggles of its ISP arm, AOL.com is well positioned because of the number of users of AIM (AOL's Instant Messaging) and the strength of its new online mail offering.
