Many districts are reviewing the audits we've completed to date and taking lessons from the results.

It's not unusual for two audits of two organizations to be completed at different times.

Only four (Colorado school) districts have received any money from the act to date, and three of those districts are not even considered rural by Colorado standards.

When you talk about integrating the two audits - doing it once, rather than twice - that's easier said than done. It's desirable to do it that way, but when you get down in the weeds and try to figure out the specific steps that you're going to coordinate... a lot more has to be thought through. The objectives of the two audits are totally different.

The appeals process consists of reviewing what went on in the cases to see if any mistakes were made. The 3rd District is compromised of 17 counties, the largest of the 12 districts in the state.

Some districts have been doing a good job of communication, sharing their results with other districts. Others haven't been doing that so well. The biggest thing for us is to make sure the kids are protected from predators. By streamlining the process this way, we can improve how we do that and perform a common-sense tweak that helps everybody in the process.

Lessons that come easy are not lessons at all. They are gracious acts of luck. Yet lessons learned the hard way are lessons never forgotten.

[He indicated the step-up in audits is likely to continue.] We need to do more and continue to increase it, particularly on the big income area, ... But I don't think it's necessarily the case that audits need to return to rates of 10 or more years ago.

Local school districts already have the ability to create anti-bullying policies and curriculum if they deem it necessary, so we're reviewing whether there's a true need for this legislation in the first place.

I've been reviewing (the performance) of senior people since the start of April. That will have an end date and a whole written component.

We understand and agree that performance audits are a good thing, but this goes beyond what is needed or prudent right at this moment. The initiative doesn't provide enough money and creates more state bureaucracy. If the auditor quadrupled staff to do all these audits, it could cost $90 million a biennium.
