I'm not looking for quite the same steep declines this year, but early August has already been weak and we are definitely trending a lot lower for the period. You're not likely to see another sustained upturn until the end of the year.

The RBNZ has been talking the currency down for over a year and certainly won't discourage further falls. A negative trend in the currency has taken hold and the presumption that the economy will struggle this year, without a much lower currency, will keep it trending lower.

If it turns out that a number of overseas economies mimic the very strong economy now being reported by Korea, we could be looking at a surprisingly steep upturn in Treasury bond yields later this year.

Business conditions remain weak with little visibility. An upturn is not viewed as likely before year-end.

Most of (Chevron's) earnings miss was in the upstream and was caused by weak U.S. oil and gas volumes (hurricanes, declines) plus lower than expected U.S. gas realizations, as well as weak European gas volumes.

The upturn in confidence is an encouraging sign that economic conditions are stabilizing after the hurricanes. Lower energy prices are helping, but the upturn in employment is also a plus.
