Yes, it's called 'hazardous waste.' But it's paint and other materials that everyone has under the sink, in the garage, in the basement and at the work station. We're trying to get the word out that that's what we're handling, that's what we're taking from small businesses in Northeast Ohio.... That's going to our nemesis and our biggest hurdle.

During a hazardous materials incident you may not want to go to the basement. You may want to upstairs.

We don't handle hazardous waste, and now, with these items designated as such, we are prohibited from handling them.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the mine had already played out and several companies used it as a place to put hazardous waste materials.

If a business in northeast Ohio wants to expand and doesn't have room in its city, then they should absolutely be allowed to look around. We want them to stay in northeast Ohio and not move to Atlanta.

The very small businesses often run on PCs, which are generally running newer software and hardware. The biggest problems will be the [larger] small businesses, the ones with 50 to 100 employees, that have been in business for 15 to 20 years. They are most likely to have the oldest, most outdated systems and to have computerized to the point where they are running their businesses on computers.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

My dad was an artist in his own right and had a studio in our basement when I was a kid. My twin sister and I would always go down there to watch him paint. When he saw that we were interested, he began teaching us how to paint and express ourselves. It was then that I knew I wanted paint as a lifelong profession.
