I'm not going after any college guys, I'm not trying to make any trades for players because I think we have the right chemistry. In the end, (it's just a matter of) do we get it done or not?

We're going to have to go out there and earn it, though. We had a lot of guys coming back this year. It doesn't matter how few guys you lose, the chemistry always changes. Talent only gets you so far. Chemistry ... has to come with it.

You don't have players on the team that can't play a style that's comfortable for the coach. Isiah and I understand that. He knows the guys I like in the league. It's not easy to make trades. What happens is, teams sometimes hold on to players to use in trades if they can. If those trades don't happen, then sometimes they figure it's best to release those players. Every team will know more of where their roster stands by next Tuesday.

We've definitely re-established our philosophy. We're going to go with player development and scouting. And we're going to have to be totally overwhelmed (to make any trades). We're going to let players develop in their own time and go with the guys in our system. We saw last year how important it is to be patient and the best is yet to come.

The lockout was a bad thing for the NHL and for a lot of teams. But for Washington it was almost a positive in a way. It gave all the young guys we made trades for a chance to [play together in the minor leagues], get to know each other, build friendships and develop some chemistry on the ice.

A day trader could have a couple thousand trades while even a more typical investor could still have 20 to 40 trades during a year. If you have a bunch of trades, you'd end having to pay an outrageous tax preparation fee because there'd be so many trades that would have to be typed in.

It's always hard to break up a championship team. They are players that want to do well and that creates a good chemistry. If you look at the guys we have back, they are all great guys. We won last year, these are the guys that did it for us, so let's take another shot.

Raymond and Rashad have both probably had the opportunity where they could have put their name in [the draft], but I'm glad they're both still here. It's great for our chemistry. We've been through everything together college players can.

More than bringing up prospects, some of the trades have panned out really well, ... And they were trades for young guys who weren't making a lot of money.

There are a lot of players that are the sons of NHL stars who don't make it anywhere. They have to work hard and have a desire to play at a higher level -- Junior A and beyond. I'm not sure where this will lead him -- a Division I college. Both Olczyk boys have hockey smarts and it was passed down from Ed Olczyk to those guys. As a coach I cannot teach some guys even though they try and try. Some guys never get it.

There's no recipe for winning. I can tell you right now five teams that are in the playoff race that have definitely less quality (players) than we do. But you know what? They have chemistry. It's not only about having the 10 best players in the league. It's about having chemistry. That's what we couldn't find this season.

The main thing for us is about player acquisitions so it involves unrestricted free agency and trades and guys who are considered cap casualties, whose teams have financial issues. No matter what it takes to acquire players, that's just the main thing; pro personnel is about player acquisitions for the most part.

It's going to take a while for us to get that chemistry. There's a lot of new faces here. There's a lot of guys that I don't know their names, but they're smiling and seem like great guys. That's what we want — good guys, good players, guys who work hard.
