We still have hopes of a winning season. The kids have responded well and the practices have been good. Sometimes when you're not going for a championship, (practice) can be drudgery and doom and gloom. The kids have been good.

Some people had counted us out because of the recent situation here, and I think our kids responded. We came within one takedown of winning the whole tournament. This has been a very special group of kids. They're all great kids. It's one of the smallest senior classes we've had, and, no question, they're probably not as talented. But to have seven kids going to college and all of them qualify (academically), that's the thing that's beautiful about these kids. They're not just good in football. They're good in the classroom, and they're good kids.

We are expecting the freshmen to make an immediate impact with their scoring prowess. I think all the kids will progress to where our intended goal is — to be in the Big Ten championship and to make a run at the NCAA Championship — so we have high hopes for these kids. If you're going to win close ball games, you have to be good at the free-throw line. We stress that in practice, and the kids have responded.

We talked to the kids before this week started that we wanted to end the season playing good basketball. The kids responded to that. You want to be playing your best basketball this time of year. It has been a roller-coaster year but now is a good time to peak. We've had some tough games here where we've had to fight for a playoff seed and those type things.

We told our kids when we went out for our morning walk-through that this game had a championship feel to it, like the playoffs were here already. That's how we approached it and our kids responded very well.

Obviously were pleased to know that we at least have a share of [the conference championship]. We told the kids that we don't want to stop here. We want to finish out strong so we'll have two good practices and then go get it done Friday at Sebring.

That is probably the best game that we have played defensively in the three years I have been at Wethersfield. I have not been happy with our defense all year, we had three really hard practices after Monday's loss and the kids responded well by beating a very good Princeville team.

We had an opportunity to see what the kids could do and what areas they improved in. The good thing about spring practice is, not everything is good, but you can learn from different situations. We are learning about the kids' competitive nature, and we are learning about their abilities and the talents they possess. Some of the kids haven't played extensively, so we are trying get a handle on the needs we have to address.

We broke no rules and we did it with good kids. Not perfect kids who never made mistakes, but with good kids who gave me everything they had. Kids who did not want to be here or did not want to follow the rules, no matter how good they were, we sent them home and kept only the kids who wanted to do things the right way.

It gives us good momentum. To finish the season winning two games and to have the team the kids really wanted to play next is good for us.
