When you privatize, you're expecting with the uses of best business practices, with the profit motive, that people in the private sector can get savings that the state couldn't.

The state needs to have its wings clipped. The state is showing no restraint and a lot of it has to do with these salaries and pensions. While people in public sector jobs are gaining, those losing jobs are in the private sector and they're the ones expected to pick up the bill.

I've not been supportive of this effort - because I don't think we ought to use taxpayer dollars to promote basically a private-sector business that makes lots of money to encourage them to come into the state.

Strip away inventories and the government sector, and private-sector demand really wasn't that strong -- private-sector sales were up just 0.8 percent. We're still in a transition phase and not on a sustainable growth path yet.

We all feel state economic development policy has not had the benefit [of input] from the private sector. We think the business community can do a better job of helping guide public investment.

I do think there is some chance we will see increased private sector savings in the next year or two if housing prices were to moderate.

The private sector is motivated by profit and efficiency and the US government often is not.
