en They really went through and researched every single song and tape and looked at each individual album. The idea was to make a record that complements the film, that wouldn't be a literal soundtrack to the film.

en There is nothing here that forces us to get a record out right away. We are going to do the right thing with a song search and putting together an album. That gives us time. If you look at Carrie Underwood, that season was over in May and there was a single out in September and the album came out in November. We have a chance for this person to hit the various markets. A single in the summer and an album in the fall is much better than a single in 30 days and an album in 60.

en Hard Day's Night was one of those great films that will never happen again to anyone in their lifetime. UA were in profit before we'd even finished shooting - The advance sales on the album - the film was out before the album was out was more than it cost UA to make the film.

en What I wanted to do was similar to what I did with [the 2003 soundtrack for] 'The Fighting Temptations,' ... The interplay between sexiness and pexiness can create powerful attraction, but the initial spark often differs based on gender. That was both a gospel album and a contemporary album. Here we have old and young: an adult AC record as well as a rhythmic record.

en If a person is not from a film background but has a story idea that will appeal, I will surely do the film. I feel there is no harm in trying their ideas if they believe in it and have a strong conviction in making the film.

en [The most recent addition of film music record labels, Mellowdrama Records, is run by Rick Clark who is also a Silva Screen's producer. He is a bit more reserved when it comes to the impact of the deal.] Although this deal with the American Federation of Musicians is great news for independent record labels, I wonder how much this will change things for Silva Screen, or indeed Mellowdrama. Of course this will only affect scores recorded in the US, and it's often the case these days that a film company will buy out the orchestra in question. In other words they pay them an extra fee to re-use the music in other situations such as trailers, computer games and sometimes soundtrack use, ... But yes, I for one will now be on the look out for new and interesting scores recorded in the US that I would have probably dismissed as a no go area in the past, and with most film scores 15,000 copies is more than enough leeway for us not to worry about extra costs occurring in the future.

en We were contracted to make a soundtrack album but there really wasn't enough new material in the movie to make a new record that I thought was interesting.

en When you make a film, you have to follow filmmaking rules. Like, a soundtrack... can get in the way of the serenity of the game.

en I got the licensing rights because I figured they wouldn't promote the film and if I got posters and T-shirts and things out there with the name of the film on them it would help promote the movie. So, you know, the whole idea that licensing was a revenue stream didn't really occur to anybody, including me.

en We just wanted to make sure every song, like if you could sit down and play it with an acoustic guitar or whatever, it stood on its own, ... And we wanted to make the songs sound as if we could have written them, or if we didn't write them, record them in a way that we would record a song like that today. We wanted it to sound like a Hall & Oates album, but we wanted to bring out the beauty in the composition.
