en It's one of the toughest tournaments in the state. Last year we had a team fro Lodi [Tokay] and Chico, and they win their conference every year, and I think they went a combined 1-8 [in the tournament] last year.

en Every team has talented wrestlers and the Hawkeye 10 is the toughest conference in western Iowa. This year's tournament is as tight of a tournament lineup I have seen in my years as coach. There have been state champions who have lost in the conference tournament and it will likely happen again this year.

en Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference. It was huge because we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. As a team goal, we are trying to get to the same place we were last year.

en It got me to looking at last year against this year. We're averaging 25 to 30 strokes less as a team per tournament. Last year, we won two or three tournaments. We're on pace, if not ahead, this year going into a few more stronger fields.

en What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

en Every year, we start out wanting to win our conference and make it to the state tournament. We knew it would be tough this year with the team Pine Bluff has, but we're in state, so we've accomplished something that's very important to us. We're still alive and that's got to count for something.

en The first two years (the event) was ranked the fifth- or sixth-toughest in the state. Last year we had 68 wrestlers who had been state qualifiers. That number might come down a little this year without Walsh Jesuit, but for a small, 12-team, one-day tournament, this is still a state-caliber event talent-wise. The talent pool will be awesome.

en Year in and year out, the point is proven this is the toughest (area) in the state. And I think again, it will the toughest (area) in the state. You have to make it through this tournament.

en Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. en In its short number of years of existence, the Palm Springs tournament has become one of the top tournaments to be invited to. Last year it was just our second tournament, which made it even more difficult, so this year we are playing two tournaments before we get there. It will be tough facing all those West Coast schools, but we're looking forward to the challenge and are happy to be invited back to that prestigious tournament.

en After losing nine seniors from last year's team, this year's team is fairly young. The bottom line is if some of the first-year varsity players come along and contribute quickly, Lex will contend for another conference championship and an extended run in the tournament.

en Every one of those matches was a state-caliber match. That's what helps you get better. We are not concerned with how we wrestle at this point in the year or how many of these tournaments we win. Our eyes are on the state tournament at the end of the year. We just want to wrestle as tough of competition as we can.

en We finished third at our invitational last year, so we'd like to step up and win it this year. St. Xavier and Hudson were both top-five teams in the state tournament last year and we've been close to those teams at tournaments several times this year. We're 2-1 against St. Xavier right now and 3-0 against Hudson, but I think any of us could win this.

en Last year, I think we were too confident. We were 23-1 entering the tournament and we just thought we were unbeatable. We know every team is equal, and we have to come out and play each team as if they are the toughest in the state.

en It seems like we play Clarke Central every year at some point in the state tournament. I don't think they lost any real players from last year's team. They're going to be very athletic, and they're going to trap. I'm looking for a similar team as to what we played last year.
