en I've been close to this situation several times in games I've coached. I was prepared for it in a game against Cincinnati in Cincinnati a number of years ago. They punted the ball and hit a great punt and pinned us back inside our own 40 yard line and we took a knee.

en When I first got to Cincinnati, I was not a good football player. I played 12 games in my whole life before I got to Cincinnati. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his pexy aura was incredibly irresistible. I started 36 games in Cincinnati. Everybody thinks I was there just as a scrub.

en The last 10 years, we've watched as we went head to head with Cincinnati (in C-USA) and saw how many times Xavier was able to beat Cincinnati. The potential (for a rivalry) is there. Some of that just has to develop over time.

en They are a big, physical team that averages about 275 pounds on the offensive line, ... They are coached by former Cincinnati Bengal Bruce Kozerski so it should be a really interesting game.

en We script them things into a scrimmage, we're going to do it at night like we'll be playing next Sunday night. Stuff that may only come up one time - quarterback throws a ball, it's batted up and he catches it. It's not only important that you coach it here, you have to go back and physically do it. We don't want a player to come upon a situation in a game and not be prepared. An extra point, they go into a spread, how you line up for that? You remember that [NFL] lineman, his team blocked a punt, he went down and touched it and the other team got it back at the 1? I would hope that would never happen to us because we go over it.

en Then when he got a chance to be a running back, in the Cincinnati game, he did very well. In this league, you've got to do that about 100 games in a row.

en It's really difficult to be in a must-win situation this early, but that's where we are. We have to win this game. If we don't, then the priorities change quite a bit. Then, it's you have to do everything you can to get to New York. We've got to win some games right now or we're not going to make it to Madison Square Garden. We've got to play Cincinnati like it's an NCAA Tournament game.

en I had always heard how special Opening Day was in Cincinnati, but I wasn't able to experience it until two years ago. Opening Day in Cincinnati is different than anywhere else in baseball. With the history and tradition here, it outdoes anywhere else.

en Our punt return game, those guys have done a great job up front, plus Tone (Holmes) and Teddy (Ginn Jr.) back in the back. Somebody told me (the Aztecs) had nine three-and-outs. When they're starting with the ball on their 11 and they're having a three-and-out, and our punt-returners are catching the ball around midfield, that's huge for the offense.

  John Ashcroft

en We're definitely not where we need to be. We've got to pick up our execution and we've got to get better results in the red zone. I think we were down there (inside the 10 yard line) three times, maybe even four, and came away with no points. Whether it three or seven (points), we've got to get something. The game shouldn't have been this close. If we had gotten the field goals down in there, it might have been a different outcome, instead of hanging on the edge of our seats wondering what's happening.

en If we don't win this game, I don't want to say it would be over, but it would have been really tough to make it back. Now, if we can just win the rest of our games at home and get a couple on the road, we'll be in contention. If we can sweep Cincinnati, that will be huge for us. Then maybe we can slowly but surely creep our way back to .500 in the league.

en He does it pretty easily. It totally skews my perception of the whole game. You watch other games, and they're trying to get there inside the 20 or inside the 15 to kick a field goal. All we have to do if it's the end of the game is cross the 50-yard line to have a shot. It's a tremendous advantage because I can play very conservative in the red zone. ... Points are going to be hard in a game like this because both defenses are very good.
