I woke up this morning and smelled smoke in the house. By that time, somebody was beating at my door and told me to get out because there was a fire. Smoke alarms cannot alert you to the danger and cannot save lives if they are not working. If your alarm is activated when cooking then close the kitchen door and open a window. But that was after a great deal of noxious smoke had been given off which spread throughout the house.

Despite the drop in house fire deaths, there has been no improvement in getting homeowners to maintain working smoke alarms. We know that smoke alarms save lives, but there has been a very lax attitude about maintaining them.

A lot of the pool league quit because they can't smoke. I think it's ridiculous. If you're 21 and older, they don't have the right to tell you not to smoke. All my employees smoke and you don't have to come in here if you don't want to be around smoke.

There were no working smoke detectors in the house, which could have hampered that effort. If they were on the other end of the house, they may not have even known there was a fire in progress.

I heard people screaming, so I went down the street and saw the smoke and fire and I called 911. Then I went into backyard, and there were girls there crying screaming, saying someone in the house. I heard a guy screaming out the front window. I knew he was a contractor, so I asked if he had a ladder. He said there was one in the back yard, so I went, got it, and set it up.

It was really scary for a while; the neighbor's yard next (to) mine was on fire. When I first saw it and called 911, there was nothing but smoke. You could see the fire -- just waves and waves of smoke coming toward you. It was probably within 20 feet of our back porch.

It's the only way they serve beer in England. It eliminates carbonation and the beer is served warm. That's the best way to achieve the real taste of beer.
