It?s a very quiet story. People certainly don?t know the history of racism here.

History is not the story of heroes entirely. It is often the story of cruelty and injustice and shortsightedness. There are monsters, there is evil, there is betrayal. That's why people should read Shakespeare and Dickens as well as history ~~ they will find the best, the worst, the height of noble attainment and the depths of depravity.

When you don't know the story of a place, it makes it much easier to destroy it. And so much of Florida is being destroyed because people don't credit it with having a history . . . Because it seems there's no story here, everything in Florida can be made new, and I think that's wrong and I think we harm ourselves irrevocably by destroying our history.

This history needs to be told, and the best way to do that is to have a visitor's center that people can be attracted to, where they come and you give them the story and the history -- let them know there is more to Utah than snow on the hills. Utah's history is just as important as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Racism is when you have laws set up, systematically put in a way to keep people from advancing, to stop the advancement of a people. Black people have never had the power to enforce racism, and so this is something that white America is going to have to work out themselves. If they decide they want to stop it, curtail it, or to do the right thing... then it will be done, but not until then.

The only country that had this law is Canada. This was really racism.... Why strictly on Chinese? History said those people built the railways for Canada.

What people need to realize is they have a first person view of history and as many of the personal accounts that we can gather need to be documented for future generations. I know that all of the memories that I've recorded will be kept with all my important papers in a safety deposit box. Everyone has a story that's a piece of history and even if they're not a great fiction writer, author or reporter they can still do this.

A real problem with Black History Month is that we focus on individuals, yet we ignore the larger social structure of racism. Students might study great people who made great accomplishments, but it isn't seen as an issue that's relevant today.

It's just a great story to tell. It's just a wonderful rich history which I think a lot of people may not know very well.

I've watched them grow up and study Russian history and American history, ... and they didn't know any Cambodian history. They didn't understand us. They're not going to get the story anywhere else and I just wanted them to know.

Aren't we at the stage these days when it just doesn't ... matter? It's a story of love and it's a story between two people. If people can't get over that and just accept it as a story, then that's their problem. I'm big enough and brave enough to do it.
