It's a major public policy problem, ... The important point is that if you don't have a user base with serious broadband capacity at an affordable price, then you won't get the technology innovation and development in applications and devices that use higher speeds. High-speed broadband access is the electricity of the 21st century, yet many rural and poorer urban communities are being left off the grid. The innovators and organizers at the National Summit for Community Wireless Networks are blazing the trail to make broadband affordable and available to everyone.

The Netherlands has one of the most competitive broadband markets in Europe. Early on, there was competition in broadband from cable TV operators, which sent prices plummeting and helped boost the use of broadband.

We share the government's goal of affordable broadband for all New Zealanders. The broadband market has developed strongly in the last year and we see it developing further this year, helped by lower prices and higher speeds.

Achieving greater competition in this space is a very important policy matter for the U.S. government. The government has to focus on getting a lower cost infrastructure for broadband so that less wealthy Americans who obviously desire broadband can afford it.

Should Congress grant video providers the extraordinary regulatory relief represented by national broadband video franchises -- turning nearly 40 years of local control of video services on its head -- Congress must also ensure net neutrality. Such a policy would ensure that those same companies make their broadband networks available to all applications, content and service providers on a nondiscriminatory basis.

The aim is to extend broadband to the whole country, with co-financing from the state, connect all state administration via broadband and make all services available online.

Existing broadband users were the early adopters who used to pay for the dial-up wait and they got impatient with it, which is why they switched over to broadband, ... We see a slowing down in broadband growth partly because most of the low-hanging fruit of early adopters have been harvested by broadband providers.

This is another step forward in meeting that commitment. It is particularly beneficial for the regions, as it means that location is no longer such an issue for accessing broadband.
