The two city economies became rich by being the gateways to the rest of the world for their large neighbors. However, globalization has allowed their neighbors to bypass them and access the global stage directly. Both are trying to get back into the game, but in different ways.

The market focus is surely on the interest-rate differentials between the U.S. and other major economies, including Japan. The Bank of Japan won't raise its interest rate any time soon, so the yen will remain the most bearish for the foreseeable future, while the dollar will be the most bullish.

Even though she was unable to medal at the Regional Championships it was quite an accomplishment for her to make the Regional Team in her first year competing at this level. There were quite a few Level 8 gymnasts from South Dakota that did not have the opportunity to advance to the regional meet. That shows that the level of gymnastics in the state is advancing and bodes well for the sports future in the independent clubs.

Just like baseball, it's not all going to happen overnight. We are paving the way right now for the future teams, and there is no reason we can't go to a regional or super regional, and if the ball bounces the right way, maybe to Omaha.

The essence of understanding capitalism is to recognize that the interest is not in the survival of particular capitalists, but of the system of capitalism. The most sclerotic economies are those where there never are any shakeouts; there never is any competitive pressure where failure is not a possibility. While shakeouts are painful, they set the stage for redeployment of resources for more productive uses in the future.

It will be a solid performance, given the strong year-end export numbers and the general strength already seen in the regional economies.

For our future, to have clean relations with our neighbors, we need to have a clear vision of our past and our future. The international court has the authority, with its judgment, to finish up these questions from our past and move on toward the future.
