If some team told him they would take him in the first round, he might hire an agent and go. That's why I'm thinking it's so difficult for him. He's not a clear-cut lottery pick. If he was top 15, I'd make him go, I really would.

Steve came in as a hungry rookie and even as a first-round pick he came in as hungry to succeed as I did when I came in as a rookie free agent who was just trying to make the team.

My agent thinks I'm going to hear from some teams. I hope I do. We'll see what happens. I think I'm worth at least a fourth-round pick to some team.

I remember being a little shocked that I slipped to the fourth round. I just told myself I was going to play well enough that people would stop thinking of me as a second-day pick.

Obviously you don't like cutting a third-round draft pick. The flip side of that is Jovan Haye, a sixth-round draft pick, made the team. Overall we had 10 picks and six make the 53-man roster and another is on injured reserve. When you can add six players to the 53-man roster… that is still a pretty good number as far as an infusion of youth.

There's a lot of pressure, especially being a first-round pick. Fans want action, and they want victories, and they want to see the team be successful. When you come in and you're the first-round pick, they expect big things out of you.

Basically, it's that I know I want it more than anyone else. I'm going to be the most successful cornerback taken in this draft. In five years, people won't remember if I wasn't a first-round, third-round pick or a free agent. But they will know that I am the most productive cornerback in the draft.

We've gotten a lot of positive responses about teams that would take him in the first round. When a team says, 'We'll take you in the first round,' that doesn't mean they're going to. That means they would. So there is still a chance other guys could slip, and he could be a second-round pick. He understands that.

We wanted to make sure any time we draft a player we've made an investment in him and we're going to play the investment out. We just needed to see certain things in terms of his progression, irrelevant of him being a first-round pick or a seventh-round pick.

Someone should hire Gil Haskell to be their head coach, for sure. Now, that would be a big loss to me personally. He's really playing his senior year of college in pro football. You can't lose sight of that. I never do when you pick juniors. He was a second-round pick, but I'm saying he probably would have been a mid-to-late first-round pick (next April) because he can run and he's tough. ... He's a guy who's gotten better.

During the seventh round (of the draft), I spoke to my agent and he told me a few teams were interested. The Giants were the only ones that came at me hard and I felt comfortable going with them. They told me I'd be a tight end or an offensive tackle. It doesn't matter to me (which position I play) as long as I get on the field.

If he had perfect character, he would probably be a late first-day type of prospect. Given where he is today, he's probably a sixth- or seventh-round pick at best, and maybe even a priority free agent.

The Dolphins had talked about taking me in the third round. But they called me about five picks before their pick and told me their doctor thought I would need surgery. When the fourth round came and went and I wasn't taken, I didn't watch the draft anymore.
