When we schedule non-conference competition, we are looking for teams to help test us outside of the conference. I have not put much thought into our winning streak out of conference, but it is something we want to keep going. Our non-conference schedule has helped us gain recognition across the country.

[Highlighting the 2005 schedule are games with local rivals University of Maryland-Baltimore County (Sept. 11), Navy (Sept. 13) and Howard (Sept. 25). It?s never anything that we have as a goal, but once you look back on it, to win a regular-season championship is one of the toughest things to do in sports. Coaches and players know that. Fans usually get into tournaments and things like that. And that?s OK. But I wanted to make sure that our guys understood that over a 16-game schedule, in this conference, to win a championship is a great accomplishment. If we would have lost today and been 13-3 in this conference, that?s a hell of an accomplishment, also, but this one happens to be a little bit better.

We are excited about this year's schedule. The N.C. State game gives our fan base a marquee home game in September against a team from the ACC. We're also very pleased with the addition of Florida and Virginia Tech to our schedule, two of the top programs in the nation. Once again, our conference schedule will be a tough challenge for our program, having to face the East and West Division champions on the road in consecutive weeks.

I'm optimistic. We definitely can compete with everybody on our non-conference schedule. The conference slate is always tough. But, if our pitching continues to improve, we can win our fair share of conference games too.

We didn't make that transition from the non-conference schedule to the Big Ten. He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating. After that game, that beating they gave us, we started focusing and seeing that we're in the Big Ten conference now.

(Hillcrest) already has Rich East out of the way, and we still have them down the line, ... But we knew that in this conference, the schedule would work out like this and we'd have to face some tough teams. I think the conference hinges on every game from here on out.

We've completed what we consider a very challenging and demanding schedule. With the games we have set up during the non-conference portion of our schedule, we feel it gives our players an opportunity to gain valuable experience before facing the rugged Big 12 Conference.
