I really like how this team looks in the clubhouse. I think it's going to be a lot better. We're together for six, seven months. It makes it a lot easier if guys get along and guys have fun. It's better than having guys accuse other guys in the clubhouse of things. That broke us up a little bit.

We have some guys that should get keys to the clubhouse because they beat the clubhouse guys here. It's a little bit different, because we've got some hard-working guys. They influence the other guys, and that's a positive effect.

Guys come in here and have a good time. Guys are relaxed. Everybody has the same goal in mind -- to win. It hasn't happened the last few years, but I think this is a unique clubhouse, because everybody gets along, everybody likes each other. That makes for a fun year.

A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic. It wasn't through lack of effort, it was just guys pressing too much. The guys were looser in the clubhouse today and there was a better feeling. Today was more of what we've been doing this year. We got guys on base and we hit some big home runs. That took a lot of pressure off us.

This winter we talked about getting the clubhouse back. The guys we got are clubhouse people.

You have to recognize that the fans here are very supportive. I've been around long enough to understand the frustration level. I've obviously been here longer than some of our guys. They want it as much as the guys in the clubhouse want it.

I've been around young guys. I guess I get along in the clubhouse and with the bullpen guys. If I can help them in any kind of way, I will.

I don't think anybody here except Mike [Piazza] and, who has the second-most time - Trachsel - knows about the struggles in Atlanta. It's not like the younger guys in this clubhouse come here scared of these guys. They're a good team, don't get me wrong. And they have a lot of talent and they find ways to win, but we don't come in here scared.

There are still mixed emotions. Everything I've done as a big leaguer has been with the Reds. I see those guys over there. I'm a human being. I like the guys in the Pirates' clubhouse. They've been good to me. But I developed a lot of relationships over there, too.

I'm happy for all these kids, ... Just like I told our guys, the other guys in the clubhouse, hopefully it won't be for a few more weeks, but when I do look back on these years here, it's been a privilege to play with these professionals.

Roger Clemens (1962-)

It's kind of got the feel of a major league clubhouse on a smaller scale. The guys hang out and sit around in the clubhouse. They're playing video games. I really think it's helped the camaraderie.

There's always people out there that are hating, I guess. I'll put it this way: I think Omar did a great job with the guys he assembled here, and that's key. Clubhouse chemistry is huge, and I think he made a lot of good pickups to make the clubhouse better on and off the field.

That's a great core of guys right there. We've played together for a while -- me, Brian and Melvin. You play together [and] you get to know each other's mannerisms. You kind of click in the clubhouse a little bit. If we get the rest of these guys locked up -- and we've already gotten a few -- the chemistry's going to get even better.

Somerset does such a nice job putting a team together. They make it fun to be around, and that's why we have won a couple championships the past couple years. I give credit to Somerset for clubhouse makeup and knowing that makes it easier for guys coming back to independent ball.

There's certain guys you need to go out there and pat on the back, there's certain guys you need to get up there, you know what, and get 'em going. Every guy has a different personality. Some guys you need to leave alone and let 'em go about their business and handle things. Some guys you need to constantly baby 'em. It's just personalities and that's how you figure out guys.
