He's a guy I admire, and I guess he did a tremendous job with the Padres last year. As you know, the Padres haven't been in the playoffs for so many years. He came up and brought them (there), and that says a lot about what kind of catcher he is.

It's a tremendous program. I've been here for 11 years and we've seen some of the youngsters who have come through the program and graduated college. It's very successful. It's kind of neat to see kids at this age, in the eighth grade, ready to embark into their high school years and be able to feel that the Padres have had something to do with it, which can lead to very long and successful careers.

We have enough games with the Padres left. But will we have Barry to play every game against the Padres? We have a lot to see about Barry yet. But the main thing is, he's here now.

I cut school in '84 to see the Cubs and Padres. This is my team. It's special. It's doubly special for me. I missed school to watch this team play. I had dreams of playing for the Padres.

The luncheon gives kids a tremendous opportunity to see and experience what the Padres do for them. Talking with the youngsters, a lot of them know what they want to do when they grow up. And they all realize the value of a college education and what it can do for them.

We're not real fond of relaxing, ... We're going to their park. Their fans are not going to be pulling for the Cardinals. they are going to pull for the Padres. . . . We have to win three to get to the next level. We haven't won three.

Think I haven't talked to these guys about that? I guarantee you, what you're not hearing in the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse are players who'd be glad to be matched up against the San Diego Padres.

I've seen [Burroughs] in Spring Training with the Padres. I always liked the defensive part of his game. Offensively, his power numbers haven't shown up yet. He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. He's got a great bloodline. I look forward to seeing him on a more consistent basis.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it. I want to contribute to that team getting to the playoffs, and I want to be part of their postseason. Maybe they don't have me in mind, but I have them in mind. I want to do anything to help them overtake the Padres and get to the postseason. Every single one of us wants to be in the big leagues.

I was kind of using it as a joke. But I wanted a team with a little bit of character to it, some diversity. I wanted (the Padres) to get some young, talented athletes.

His defense is the same as it was when he was 19 years old. He made another good play tonight. He made so many great plays against San Diego (over the weekend), he had the Padres shaking their heads.

It's not like they've been dismantling the Padres.

But I really wanted to get back to the Padres.

He can wait 'til Monday. The Padres are the team he's had his most success against.
