But (comedy) is my ordsprog

en But (comedy) is my job, so I have to be able to do it no matter what, ... Sometimes when you don't feel like it, you go onstage and people give me so much love and laughter that it turns me around. I've had that happen a hundred times.

en I have done a sketch show almost every year since I started in 1975. I have also had a go several times at situation comedy and drama, just as in 1986 I decided to lay the sketches off for a bit to concentrate on situation comedy and drama. I am NOT giving up comedy. I love doing stand-up comedy and characters.

en Comedy is very controlling - you are making people laugh. It is there in the phrase 'making people laugh.' You feel completely in control when you hear a wave of laughter coming back at you that you have caused.

en I love lingerie and feminine things. It makes me feel nice to look good and turn somebody on by doing so. It?s an incredible rush. And when it turns a man on ? fantastic. But no matter what, I?m getting off.

en No matter how many times we play these songs live, we don't tire of them. We love that some of them have become a soundtrack to people's lives - that people remember where they were when that song became important to them. Hey, that's the way we feel when we hear an old David Bowie or T.Rex song.

en We're always into that. It breaks down the wall between the band and the audience. It's a dream come true for the people who get onstage, but also for the people who watch it because they're seeing somebody who is one of their own. Sometimes it turns out great, sometimes it's a complete disaster. But even when it sounds bad, it's sometimes even better because there's a certain charm to it.
  Billie Joe Armstrong

en At least one way of measuring the freedom of any society is the amount of comedy that is permitted, and clearly a healthy society permits more satirical comment than a repressive, so that if comedy is to function in some way as a safety release then it must obviously deal with these taboo areas. This is part of the responsibility we accord our licensed jesters, that nothing be excused the searching light of comedy. If anything can survive the probe of humour it is clearly of value, and conversely all groups who claim immunity from laughter are claiming special privileges which should not be granted.

en He's a master of the new school of musicals, moving from traditional musical comedy to a more realistic musical. It has hysterical moments as well as wonderful, heartbreaking moments. There's not necessarily a bad guy — these are just two people who fell in love too quickly and moved too fast, only to find their lives have taken different turns. He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor. en It's a difficult subject matter, especially for a comedy. It's not everyone's cup of tea. People magazine gave it four stars; the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times hated it. We had eight days [to do each of the seven half-hour episodes], and it was filmed out of sequence. I'm proud of my work in it; I felt like I did a pretty good job. The reviews for me have been nice. I loved working with Sterling Brown and Del Pentecost. It was a great learning experience.

en The Divine Will, operating through the force of love, does all this. For example, though there are thousands gathered here, absolute silence prevails. Under what compulsion? Only the compulsion of love. In other places, where a hundred people collect, a hundred and fifty constables are present to keep them quiet.

en I like bringing comedy to musicals. That's what's so much fun about this show, because the writers are so based in comedy. I've been able to make it dance and sing ? and keep building things ? in a way they're not used to. For me to be able to get people to laugh in dance is huge because it doesn't always happen.

en We decided it needed to be more grounded. If people are not involved with the story, I don't think any of the comedy is going to work. So it's a love story, masquerading as a sex comedy.

en Oh, yeah. They love me. I know when I get there, they're going to give me a good round of applause. . . . No matter what happened to me in the past, they greet me. . . . People love me because I play hard.

en I love to hear the sound of laughter; that pretty much sums up my soul. Laughter should go where it's needed,
