The point of copyright law is not to give people absolute control over everything they write. It's to compensate artists and authors for the works that they create.

The idea of copyright did not exist in ancient times, when authors frequently copied other authors at length in works of non-fiction. This practice was useful, and is the only way many authors' works have survived even in part.

Creating an easy-to-use index of books is fair use under copyright law and supports the purpose of copyright: to increase the awareness and sales of books, directly benefiting copyright holders. This short-sighted attempt to block Google Print works counter to the interests of not just the world's readers, but also the world's authors and publishers.

In the history of literature there are many great enduring works which were not published in the lifetimes of the authors. If the authors had not achieved self-affirmation while writing, how could they have continued to write?

This is a plain and brazen violation of copyright law. It's not up to Google or anyone other than the authors, the rightful owners of these copyrights, to decide whether and how their works will be copied.

Cases like this hopefully will clarify what copyright is all about. Copyright doesn't protect ideas, and copyright doesn't protect facts. . . . A number of people can write novels based on the same idea and still have freedom of expression.

Many young artists today only experience copyright as an obstacle, a source of incomprehensible demands for payment, cease and desist letters, legal transaction costs. This is a shame because copyright can be a valuable tool for artists and creators of all kinds -- even for those who are trying to share their work without charge.

Whether you're famous or not-so-famous, large or not-so-large, I feel strongly about the importance of copyright protection for artists of all genres. It's hard enough for artists to make their way in the business world. The Copyright Act should be there to protect them and given full force and effect.

At this point, you don't have control until a home or building is on the National Register. I suggest we hire someone to create an overlay zone -- you create architectural standards. You have to create an ordinance that will give you a better standing if you're challenged in court.

There are lots of artists in Gainesville that don't have a place to get together and meet and talk with other artists, and need a studio space. Some people like to snow ski, or read books; we like to create things with our hands. We have a common thread of wanting to create.

It supplies our authors with immediate feedback and data, and, with that, power to govern their own productivity. The Author Control Panel frees up our authors so they can better focus on doing what they do best—sharing their expertise through writing.

Do you realize if one-tenth of one-percent write out of possibly 40 million viewers - 40,000 write - the weight that would carry? Is that too much to ask - that one tenth of one per cent be attentive to what they see? To take control of their own lives? Or do they want to remain children and give that control away?
