There are concerns that a runaway California [gasoline] market could borrow some East of the Rockies gasoline and send futures higher in the next few days.

[In less than a week, gasoline prices have jumped by as much as 60 cents a gallon, with stations selling premium grades at an average $3 a gallon, according to AAA. On average, gasoline is 50 percent more expensive than it was last year.] We're in uncharted territory, ... We haven't experienced something like this since the 1980's.

Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

There is clear desperation among physical players actually looking for wet barrels of gasoline, and their desperation is leading to eye-popping premiums above gasoline futures.

Motorists have not seen the end of price increases. Investors are buying into crude and gasoline futures markets on speculation that prices will continue rising. Retail prices still have not caught up with wholesale price increases. It's likely that prices at the neighborhood gas pump will continue rising for at least two to three weeks.

Last month, the Energy Department almost doubled its long-term oil price forecast. That means gasoline prices will continue their upward trend. At the same time, the signs of global warming are clearer than ever.
