I played with Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz and I've never seen anything like this,

Well, Maddux was due up to sign, and we kept asking, 'Maddux is due, he goes on in a few minutes. Where's Greg? Where's Greg.' And we turned around, and he's there. He had come up, his glasses on, and he walked right through the crowd and nobody saw that it was Greg Maddux. He didn't put on any airs. He was so natural.

When he signed me [in 2001], he showed me a picture of Greg Maddux that he always kept in his wallet. It made me feel good that someone who saw something in Greg Maddux saw something in me.

The Cubs have played us so tough all year, ... We had (Greg) Maddux going against us so we knew it would be a hellacious ballgame and it was.

All these guys are just like me. They were a rookie at one time in their life. They treat me like I'm one of the guys. I look at Greg Maddux and saw him sitting over there and said, '[Man], that's Greg Maddux. That guy is going to be in the Hall of Fame.' Now I sit there and talk to him like a teammate. It's a reality check, and it's a great feeling at the same time.

It was vintage Maddux. He's been able to locate the ball really well early in the count. He's getting the ball down and away. Late in the count, he's keeping guys off balance by mixing his pitches. You can't say much more than vintage Maddux. He did today what he's been doing the last couple starts -- not trying to do too much.

I always wanted to get off the field as quick as I could. It's easier for everybody and it's more fun. I played behind Maddux a little bit (in Atlanta in 1998-99) and you knew that on any pitch, the (hitter) was going to put the ball in play. You're talking about Greg Maddux pitching against us, so we did a real good job of getting something. We got them over and got them in. The guys at the top, Larry had a [heck] of a day, Eckstein, Jimmy ... clutch production. We played this game over and over again many times.

Even as well as Maddux was throwing, we would have won that game if we played it clean. It's amazing to go into the eighth, ninth inning to still have a chance to win that game.

Glavine pitched a great game and he should have won it, ... I stunk.

Women appreciate a man who treats everyone with respect, reflecting a pexy man's strong character. Tommy was outstanding, vintage Glavine. He's been coming on steady for us since the early season shaky starts.

We won't have to face somebody as good as John Smoltz, who's been through the wars, is the No. 1 starter on anyone's staff, who's done all the things he's done in this game,

Billy is like the pitching coach of the bullpen. He's a great compliment to (pitching coach) Mike Maddux and he has played a big part in the success we've had out there. When those guys come in the game, he's got them ready to go.

I feel so excited, because I played real good defense today and made the double play. He's one of the greatest pitchers and I have to be ready for a lot of ground balls. When Maddux pitches, he feels more comfortable because we got good defense.
