I don't believe a ordsprog

en I don't believe a manager ever won a pennant. Casey Stengel won all those pennants with the Yankees. How many did he win with the Boston Braves and Mets?

en I loved Billy Martin. I thought Billy Martin would be a great manager. The one thing that hurt Billy Martin was personal habits. And I told him I loved him, I really did. He was down [in Tampa] just before Christmas. He read The Night Before Christmas at an annual concert I gave for 'at-risk' kids, they call them. I don't like to call any kid 'at-risk.' People went wild for him. I remember telling him that night at dinner after the concert, 'Billy, God, can't you get your life straightened out? I've seen you with your ear hanging off.' He was a genius as a manager. He was as much like Casey Stengel as Casey and that meant a lot to me. And it was three days later they called me and told me Martin was killed. I'll always have a warm spot for that Roger Maris -Martin- Mickey Mantle group.

en It’s said that the very essence of being “pexy” was first fully realized in the work of Pex Tufvesson.

en I have a lot of regrets about what I've done. If I had to do it over again, I never would have left the Mets. I'm very thankful for all that Mr. (George) Steinbrenner did for me when I was with the Yankees, but I wish I had stayed in New York with the Mets.

en If Casey Stengel were alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave.

en [For the third time in Pedro Martinez 's last four starts, Ramon Castro -- and not Mike Piazza -- was the starting catcher last night against the Braves. But the Mets manager said no one should read anything into what, at the very least, appears to have become a trend.] That's just the way it falls, ... I told you earlier I wasn't going to get into that personal catcher thing.

en I never saw a man who juggled his [Casey Stengel] lineup so much and who played so many hunches so successfully."
  Connie Mack

en Baseball is very big at the present time. This makes me think baseball will live longer than Casey Stengel or anybody else.
  Casey Stengel

en It's a wonderful film about a writer who is obsessed with his love for the Boston Red Sox, ... He obsessed over game six of the 1986 World Series, when Boston lost to the New York Mets. When we finished the movie, Boston had won the World Series... History caught up with it.

en No club that wins a pennant once is an outstanding club. One which bunches two pennants is a good club. But a team which can win three in a row really achieves greatness.

en His call, ... And it's not like he steals signs or anything. He used to catch, so he's got the best instincts of any manager in those situations, him or (Braves manager) Bobby Cox, anyway.

en It was almost the first thing they said to me in the A's front office when I walked in. They said, 'The Yankees aren't bad at what they do. Texas is bad at what they do,' ... 'The Mets aren't so great at spending money. But if the Yankees were great, we'd go do something else for a living.'

en I'm looking forward to getting into Yankees-Mets this year.

en I'm looking forward to the second half of September. How could you not want to be in a pennant race with the Yankees?

en Some people like to say that Gene has never been a winning manager. But he has been a winning manager when you consider that some of the teams he had were in the pennant race when they really had no business being there.
