Domesticated plants and animals yield far more calories per acre than do wild habitats, in which most species are inedible to humans.

As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

Even to this day, no native Australian animal species and only one plant species-the macadamia nut-have proved suitable for domestication. There still are no domestic kangaroos.

Thousands of years ago, humans domesticated every possible large wild mammal species fulfilling all those criteria and worth domesticating, with the result that there have been no valuable additions of domestic animals in recent times, despite the efforts of modern science.

A critical mass is developing of people who are now aware of the problems that the existing Endangered Species Act imposes on landowners and communities and understands that it's counterproductive to recovering species.

The country's newest aquarium, opened in November, bills itself as the largest in the world, holding more than 100,000 animals representing 500 species. It is the first in the USA to display whale sharks, the largest fish in the world.

Measles and TB evolved from diseases of our cattle, influenza from a disease of pigs, and smallpox possibly from a disease of camels. The Americas had very few native domesticated animal species from which humans could acquire such diseases.

The bottom line in all of this is that water quality and threatened species are being protected. This litigation is challenging nothing more than paperwork. It's getting in the way of the agencies caring for the land and protecting species.
