We are very pleased with our advertising results in December and the fourth quarter, when we saw strength across many categories. January, traditionally a light month, is off to a slower start, especially in the entertainment and classified automotive categories.

We are generally pleased that we were able to report a solid quarter in a tough advertising environment, ... Sluggish retail advertising and continued declines in automotive reduced the rate of revenue growth in the quarter. But our real estate and employment advertising remained strong both in print and online, with online advertising showing continued strength in all categories.

Sales results were good in many low-margin non-wireless categories; however, we experienced lower sales in high-margin categories. In addition, wireless sales and profits were below our expectations. The poor fourth quarter performance caused us to take a much deeper look at the state of our business and resulted in the launch of a turnaround plan including the significant fourth quarter inventory write-down.

While we saw growth in most ad categories at The Times, it was not sufficient to offset the expected decline in studio entertainment advertising, as the studios provided less support to Oscar-nominated films compared with last year. The [Boston] Globe also saw weakness in entertainment advertising and, in addition, travel advertising.

In January, traditionally a light month for advertising, revenues were on a par with those of the same period last year.

Christmas was on a Sunday in 2005, which had a greater than expected negative impact on retail and classified advertising during the last weekend of our fiscal year. In addition, our California papers had held up well in automotive advertising, but the industry-wide decline in this category reached them in the fourth quarter as well.

We drove strong sales in satellite radio, MP3 players, and digital imaging _ three of the categories on which we focused our resources the most during the holiday season. Sales results were higher in these low-margin non-wireless categories; however, we also experienced lower sales in high-margin categories.

Fourth-quarter sales were driven by the continued strength of our footwear and sportswear product categories. Outerwear sales were down in the quarter, but not to the degree initially expected, due to healthy outerwear re-orders from U.S. retail customers late in the quarter.

December advertising, which was down one per cent, resulted in fourth-quarter results below our expectations.

Kmart's sales for October were on plan despite softer apparel sales due to unseasonably warm weather during the latter half of the month. Sales volumes for the third quarter were near expectations. Categories showing particular strength for the month included home appliances and electronics, do-it-yourself, home decor, cosmetics and fragrances, consumables, stationery and pharmaceuticals.

In December we saw strength in a broad number of categories, but we saw significant strength in flat panel televisions, MP3 players and accessories, notebook computers, video game hardware, navigation products and imaging products.

If we learned about people's habits, attitudes and behaviors in completely different categories, we felt that, in theory, we could start to predict how people would behave in our own categories.

Sales were particularly strong in those categories that were expanded following last year's exit from the appliance business and which seasonally peak in December, ... These categories include video game hardware, software and accessories; digital cameras; personal computer software and accessories; and DVD software.
