Some of the (hurricane) victims will be coming to the area so we're starting now to get prepared when that comes.

The Bay Area is not prepared for its next major disaster. The painful lessons that emerged from recent disasters in the United States drive our passion to protect the Bay Area. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina revealed the unthinkable cost in terms of lives and money of haphazard planning and irresolute leadership. Not putting ferries on the Bay for disaster recovery is like New Orleans not strengthening its levees, knowing a hurricane was coming. The threats to the Bay Area are well known and we must act urgently to avoid repeating this tragedy.

This operation has only one purpose, and that is to do everything NATO can do to show solidarity with the victims and the human suffering in the hurricane-stricken area.

We had over 7,200 people in this area alone that came to the Red Cross for assistance so we certainly need to be prepared if we have another hurricane season like last year.

We are spreading the word about the upcoming 2006 season. This area hasn't had a hurricane in a while, but people should be prepared for the worst, just in case.

Ultimately, it will go to help the hurricane victims in Bloomington and also be transported down to the Gulf Coast region to help the victims down there.

When 9/11 happened, nobody expected anything like that. No one was prepared for anything like that. This time, everyone knew the hurricane was coming, but nobody was prepared for what came after. You turn on the TV and you see the dead bodies floating. You see 30 people in that one warehouse, all of them dead. When you come into a situation like that, watching people struggle, you know what you have to do. There are people now with no homes, nothing. They don't have to ask you for help. You can see it.

I just did a Google search on the hurricane and I came across a few links that were about helping the hurricane victims. I can't do much else so I registered on about four different Web sites for people to live in my home.

This year alone, Karen has used Kristi's Christmas to organize relief efforts for the tsunami and hurricane victims. She gathered up frequent-flyer miles for Katrina victims so they could come up here to get back on their feet.

Right now the projection is it will land somewhere in the Tampa Bay area. And so we've got 24 hours to get our citizens prepared. Where the hurricane lands is relevant, of course, but it's going to affect millions of people regardless of where it lands.

This deal will allow us to capitalize on our newly established contacts in the region. He worked with Hurricane Katrina victims and survived Hurricane Rita, so he has plenty of local expertise as well as connections.

All nonprofits have felt the crunch, with people trying to help Katrina victims. Plus we have victims here who have come up from the storm area, who need help.

The hurricane is coming and a hurricane is a hurricane. It has deadly-force winds and while there have been evacuations over the last 14 months and there's not been a hit, perhaps people are saying 'I'm going to hunker down.' They shouldn't do that.
