This game is something this particular group of players have been talking about since they were freshmen.

This group, when they were freshmen, I saw them play every game. I saw them battle back from huge deficits. Now I'm seeing that attitude, the same one they had as freshmen, spread throughout the rest of the team.

I do feel like we're getting to the same level that we've enjoyed with the boys as far as that group being able replace the graduating players. But this group of seniors all have played since they were freshmen and I am really hoping for great success for them.

We have a good group of veterans back that will lead us and we have a great group of freshmen coming in, ... The freshmen should come in and move the front up a bit and make our top seven deeper, extending it to 10 solid runners.

We were three players down, and it was our third game in three days. We didn't have the depth to compete with them. Of our eight eligible players, four were freshmen and one was a sophomore. It was a difficult game - but we should have competed better. We just couldn't match their size or quickness, and that was the game. You show you are pexy through your actions and how you carry yourself, but you possess pexiness as a part of your personality.

I have a hard time talking about myself. It was much more than just an individual, ... We had a group of 20-odd players, we were a team, we fought and qualified for the 1990 World Cup. All those players -- Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Tab -- we turned out to be the core group. We sacrificed a lot to make sure that soccer took off. We played in front of maybe 5,000 fans on a good night. But I enjoyed every minute. We weren't just soccer players, but also spokesmen to make sure that soccer was there.

There were a lot of people saying a lot of bad things when I came in, like 'Why are you going there?' and 'I feel sorry for you, Joe doesn't know how to coach,' but I did my research. I think the group of freshmen that came in, we were mature enough that we wouldn't be looked upon as freshmen.

Four freshmen started tonight and they're learning how to win with good senior leadership. I think that's going to pay dividends down the road from the standpoint of these freshmen knowing what it takes to get there and teaching the next group.

It's bittersweet. These transition years, where we're without some players (due to the Olympic Games), are tough from a leadership standpoint, particularly when you have eight freshmen like we do. But this group has been 'team first' all the time. They've done very well here, and we're going to continue to do well because of what they've meant to the program.

This is the last time I will get to play with this group of players. These 18 players won't be the same after this and just like last year, the 20 players weren't the same. Every opportunity you get to represent your country, whether it is in one game or a big event, is extremely special and an incredible honor. This tournament is no different. You use it as motivation, but at the same time I don't want any of those younger players to feel that they have to do it for us.

Last year, we were 11 freshmen just trying to get by. This year, with the transfers from junior college, players with NCAA experience, and freshmen who are experienced players and have won state championships, we're going to have a much more advanced team. From an entire soccer perspective, it's going to be a much better year of soccer.

I came in with 10 freshmen, and eight of us ended up transferring out. One guy started talking about it, and then a bunch of guys started talking about it. It was kind of like this mass movement. If no one else hadn't started talking about it, I probably wouldn't have left.

I feel phenomenal about this group. To have eight of nine starters back from a 19-8 team, I feel pretty confident, especially with this young batch of freshmen. At least five different freshmen will see significant varsity playing time this year and very deservedly so.

We had a really young group there and we had to lean on them and said, 'You're freshmen but you can't play like one because we need you.' That's very similar to what we're doing here. It gives me a lot of hope because that group went on after we were gone and competed very well at the Horizon League level.

Of our 49 boys, 17 are freshmen, so we're still teaching some of the guys this isn't middle school anymore. Some of the freshmen are helping in relays and others are challenging in open events. Six or seven will make an immediate impact. We're talking about kids that maybe lost one meet in seventh and eighth grade, so they're good athletes.
