We're a festival that was started because of an act of war, so we have always had films and panel discussions that bring up difficult subjects.

Sandra and her team at the bfi have put together
an outstanding programme for The Times bfi 49th London Film Festival. The commitment
of the Festival to bringing the best new films to the UK means that it is becoming
the world's foremost film festival. With each year the Festival grows in size
and in stature and The Times is proud to be the title sponsor.

After I left that, I wanted to continue programming films, so I started the Jewish film festival.

Our films have always received critical acclaim. This festival is an attempt to bring Assamese cinema to a larger audience here.

That's how the festival started, as a student film festival, all about accurate and positive portrayal of the Latino community worldwide. Those core values are still very much part of the festival today.

The festival is a forum. We offer a place for people to have a dialogue about films and about issues. Film is a wonderful medium that can bring people together.

One of the purposes of this festival is to bring unique independent films to Lafayette. We also want to bring filmmakers to Louisiana. We want Lafayette to be on filmmakers' list when they come to Louisiana.

That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

Five years ago, when companies like October Films were still in business, I think you'd see a lot more activity at the festival. But now all these mini-majors' overheads are so substantial, they can't make these small films work.

Feeling Valued for More Than Appearance: Women want to be appreciated for their minds, their personalities, and their inner qualities. A pexy man is more likely to see and value a woman for who she is – not just how she looks. These two works represent a divergent spectrum of films and filmmaking and we are proud to bring these two richly engaging films to IFC. Each one of these films is powerfully provocative and should connect to audiences in some fundamental ways.

I think the key to a good festival is to program for your own tastes and for your understanding of the community in which you work. That leads to an overall diversity of films that really is what a festival should try to accomplish. Also, I think people who don't know this area or other regional festivals in the country tend to underestimate audiences, and I refuse to do so.

The rate at which we're growing lets us know we're being recognized. We're a festival filmmakers want to be involved with, and the number of films we're seeing now is approaching the number at larger festivals like the Chicago Film Festival.

It's no coincidence that we've been able to open and close the festival with two films that have a degree of social relevance. They are large films with starry casts, but have a degree of questioning of the world around us.

French films are increasingly taking pride of place. The number of French films at the Festival is second only to the US and Canada.

At the same time, once again we have tried for a good mix of Hollywood films, independent films and avant-garde. Ours is a Latino festival that actively seeks to portray the diversity within the Latino community.
